Strangers

He hugged her tightly, nuzzling his face into her neck. “Thank god I found you, darling!”

She started slightly, going rigid and starting to pull away. “What the hell are you doing? Do I know you?”

“Just go with it,” he whispered in her ear with a hint of desperation. “Please.”

She started to pull away again, until, over his shoulder, she saw two bulky, scary-looking man coming towards them, both reaching for something hidden inside their coats. She felt eyes on them, and a knot formed in her stomach.

She wrapped her arms around the stranger and hugged him back, her hands flat against his muscular back.

The men studied them a moment longer, hands still in their coats, and it took all of her willpower to both avoid locking eyes with them and not recoil from the stranger’s grasp. But the hug wasn’t that bad.

The stranger did smell heavenly, and his strong arms enveloped her in his warmth. He embraced her like an old lover, and for a moment, she allowed herself to pretend that he was.

The men moved on, and after another long moment, the stranger finally released her and took a step back. They studied each other for a moment, each having a similar thought now that they were face-to-face.

The stranger smiled and, to her surprise, took her hand and kissed it gently.

“Thank you; you probably just saved my life. They’ve been hunting me.”

She didn’t know what to say.

“I owe you, and I always repay my debts,” the stranger said, still smiling. “I guess that means we’ll be seeing each other again.”
