Pretty Chains

He gives her silver after he yells,

gold after he throws things,

rubies after he hits the wall,

and diamonds after he hit her.

He adorns her in these pretty chains,

apologies, and promises to never do it again.

Until her jewelry box is full.

She shook off the silver after he yelled,

ripped off the gold after he threw things,

tossed the rubies in the dirt after he hit the wall,

and ran the diamonds in the garbage disposal after he hit her.

She sheds those pretty ugly chains,

fake apologies, and lies that he’d never do it again.

Until her jewelry box was empty

and nothing more than chunks of wood.
