Watching When Harry Met Sally has been my New Year’s Eve tradition for many years now. I love how realistic the movie is in its depictions of friendships, relationships, breakups, the ‘it’s complicated,’ and the things in between. This particular line has always been my favorite (and it never fails to make me cry).

After years of ups and downs between Harry and Sally, Harry finally realizes that it’s Sally – it’s always been Sally – and he runs across town to find her at a New Year’s Eve party to tell her. He delivers a heartfelt, passionate monologue about the things he loves about her, and finishes by saying this line: ” And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
