Quote of the Week

“The Bhagavad Gita–that ancient Indian Yogic text–says that it is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else’s life with perfection.” ― Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert

This may seem sort of obvious, but how many of us try to fit ourselves into the mold of society’s or other people’s expectations? How many of us strive to become something we may not really wish to be just to fit into the presuppositions of life?

When we try to force ourselves into the mold – whether it’s our family’s expectations of us, what society says we “should” be, or our own misguided sense of what we think we “should” be (thanks, in part, to the unrealistic side of the internet/social media) – we may end up feeling uncomfortable, sad, empty, and unfulfilled. Even if it’s a “perfect” life, it’s not ours. But when we let ourselves be who we are, to stop trying to live up to other people’s ideals for us, we free ourselves to live our own destiny. We can find our happiness and purpose.

It isn’t easy to follow our own imperfect destiny, and it takes courage and determination to stay on our path. But in the end, I think it’s worth it to “live your truth”.
