“You’re wishin’ too much, baby. You gotta stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone oughtta be.” ― Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert
There is a distinct difference between blind optimism and being realistic. Being passive, spending all of your time on wishful thinking without taking action, will never produce the results you want. Wearing your wishbone where your backbone should be allows others to walk all over you while you stand by, wishing for things to change. It makes it easier for you to put on your blinders to things that make you feel less valuable and less worthy; it lets you accept treatment you don’t deserve.
Your wishbone is important; it is beautiful and necessary. Your wishbone stores your hopes, dreams, and optimism. It holds your dreams of how you want things to be, and your desire to see it happen. But your backbone is crucial, indispensable. It holds your tolerance for what you’ll accept, strength to say what you feel, and ability to create healthy boundaries. You need your wishbone and your backbone, but you need them in the right place.
