The Darkness and The Light

When you’ve been living in the dark for so long, the darkness becomes you. The darkness becomes all you know, your everything. Your soul absorbs the blackness, or I guess the blackness absorbs your soul. It stifles your fire, your passion, your joy. It becomes all-encompassing – this burden, this pain. You carry it with you everywhere, an all too heavy baggage that feels impossible to put down.

After you’ve been living in the dark for so long, the light becomes terrifying. It’s uncomfortable, unfamiliar. It’s a hazy, distant memory of a place you’ve been before but can’t quite place. Absorbing the light back into your soul, forcing out the darkness, is difficult… painful. And sometimes you wonder if it’s even worth it, if it really does get better. The darkness stifles… but it does not extinguish…

You can find your fire, your passion, your joy again. You can finally put down that heavy baggage, because you realize the only thing more impossible than putting the baggage down is carrying it on your shoulders forever.

Your monsters hide in the dark; they probably always will dwell there in some way. But you don’t have to live there with them. The light is warm and comforting and friendly. And it’s calling you.

Author’s Note: For anyone suffering from depression, other mental illnesses, or traumas, please remember you are never alone, even if it feels like that sometimes. You matter. And it can get better – that doesn’t mean it’s easy; it’s far from easy to heal. But you can do it, and it’s worth it. There is light out there for you! ❤️
