A Beautiful Existence

“How can you stay so positive all the time?”

“How can I not? The world is so beautiful, so magical. It’s such a gift to be a part of it.”

“But doesn’t it make you sad knowing that it will all end? Doesn’t it bother you that the things you’ve worked so hard to create will be gone someday?”

“Yes, it makes me sad sometimes, but that’s also what makes it all so special, so worthwhile. If it didn’t end, I don’t know if we would see it the same way. And when it does inevitably end, those who remain remember the impact. The firefly that sat in the cupped hands of a child will be remembered when the child – now grown – catches fireflies with her own child. The butterfly that only lived for a few weeks will be remembered for its beauty for years to come. The family pet will be remembered by each member of the family for the joy, laughter, and love it brought them. The mother’s cooking, the father’s music, the sibling’s story-telling will all be remembered with fondness.”

“And you don’t hate me for ruining everything?” Death asked quietly.

Life smiled. “Of course not. Without you, there is no meaning, no value. Together, we create a beautiful existence.”
