Book Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses

Yes… this girl finally jumped on the bandwagon! This book was recommended to me rather aggressively by my older sister… to the point that she bought me a copy and then chastised me for not starting it immediately. When she found out I read another book that was recommended to me by someone else first, she said, “what the hell? I’m your sister; I take precedence.” Then, my friend started raving about it, so I finally picked it up. And my sister and friend were right about this book!

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas is the first book in a new adult fantasy series. It follows a human woman who is forced to enter the faerie world of Prythian, and without any spoilers… the events that unfold are intense.

Published in 2015, I feel like I just started hearing about this one over the past six months or so. But damn, is it worth the hype! A Court of Thorns and Roses is beautifully written, with awesome characters and strong wit. The world-building is nothing short of incredible; Maas paints a truly intoxicating picture of the world in a way that I, as a reader, have never experienced and, as a writer, could only dream of coming close to.

It is worth noting that this book does feature adult content, including violence, gore, and sex. My friend even warned me about the sexual content, to which I made a joke along the lines of “what – is it like Fifty Shades of Gray or something?” When she paused, I was immediately thinking, shit, I was kidding. She said, “well, I will say there are parts that you wouldn’t want to read in public… you wouldn’t want someone reading it over your shoulder.” She was not wrong…. So, reader’s discretion 🤣

I highly recommend this book, and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
