A Letter to my Younger Self

My Sweet Summer-Child Self,

There is so much you don’t know, so many things you haven’t seen, done, and felt yet. This will always be true, but I am slightly older, slightly wiser than you. So, let me share my wisdom with you… if only you could have know them then.

Be Brave

The things you are afraid of doing and feeling are some of the most important things you will do and feel. So, feel afraid, take a breath, and do it anyway. You won’t regret it.

Be Resilient

What is happening in your life will pass, as all things do. The situations and the pain will not last. Nor will some of the people. Keep pressing forward. You are so much stronger than you believe yourself to be. You will be okay.

Be Ready for Change

I know you hate it, but change is inevitable. You will go to college and graduate, then be completely clueless. You will move around. You will change jobs. You will make new friends and lose old ones. People who you haven’t spoken to in years will come back into your life unexpectedly, while people who you spoke to every day for years will fade away. Your life will change, and it will be for the best, even if it doesn’t always seem like it in the moment.

And who you are right now is not who you will be in the future. What you want right now may not be what you want in a year, or even a day. It’s okay to change your mind. You will grow and change with each new experience and person that comes your way. Embrace the change – I promise you that you will like who you become.

Most Importantly… Open Your Heart

There is so much joy and love waiting for you. Open your heart fearlessly; you will receive the love of the world, and you will be able to love others more than you ever thought you were capable of. When you open your heart, you will find all of the people who fill your heart – both platonically and romantically. This – above all else – is worth it; I promise.

A few other things: be yourself, be honest, be grateful, chose happiness.

I am proud of you, and of how far you have come. And I can’t wait to see where you go.

With Love,

Your Future Self
