Where does inspiration come from?
I’m sure most creative people have wondered this at least once in their life. And I’m sure most people have their own opinion of where inspiration comes from.
I used to think inspiration came almost exclusively from experiences, especially grand experiences. And as a young writer, that was terrifying since I had so little experience.
To some degree, I still believe this is true; we can be influenced and inspired by our experiences.
At this point in my life, I believe inspiration comes from the ordinary magic of our lives. Inspiration can come from going on a walk in nature, overhearing a conversation in the grocery store, something your friends or family tells you. Making a meal can inspire you. Cleaning the house can inspire you. Your morning commute. A weekend trip. The people around you.
Anything.
Anything can be inspirational; that’s the beauty of creativity! If you are open to it… if you let your imagination do its job… you can find inspiration anywhere.
I think we can feed our imagination by doing the things that we love, things that make us truly happy. I also think that we can do ourselves a huge favor by unplugging from our technology and letting ourselves have a hard mental reset. Changing our scenery can be another great way to help fuel inspiration, because one of the worst things for creativity is stagnation.
Find inspiration anywhere and everywhere you can. Challenge yourself to find the magic in the mundane, and let your imagination run wild.
