The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Princess Bride is a romantic fantasy adventure novel originally published in 1973 by William Goldman. It was adapted into a movie in 1987, featuring a stellar cast that included Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, André the Giant, Billy Crystal, and SO many more!
I will fully admit that at the time I started reading The Princess Bride, I was mildly confused about who the real author was. The book is established as a classic tale by S. Morgenstern, abridged by William Goldman. I had to do some research to figure out whether S. Morgenstern was actually the original author or if he was the fictional original author within the lore of the story. The conclusion I reached was the later; William Goldman is the real, true author of The Princess Bride.
What a cool way to write a novel! Confuse the reader about who wrote it. 😅
At the time of writing this post, I am a little under halfway through the novel. Impressions so far…
AMAZING!
It is such an enjoyable and compelling read from the very beginning.
I had only seen the movie once before reading the book, and it had been many years since. I remembered the general premise and a few stand-out scenes (see below picture for example). And let me tell you: when I read the “inconceivable” part in the books, I found it just as funny as I did in the movie.
The book (and the movie) has so many scenes dripping with witty banter, and I would venture to call the style of humor subtle, sophisticated, “highbrow” humor.

One of the things that has really stood out to me is that the book is darker than the movie. But that does not take anything away from the experience; it just makes it slightly different.
Overall, at this point in my read-through, I am thoroughly enjoying the story. And of course, I just had to rewatch the movie while I was at it. I highly recommend both.
